Who is in charge of enforcing a child support order?

The Iowa Child Support Recovery Unit is a part of the Department of Human Services. They have office locations, also known as field offices, throughout the state to serve each county. Some of those locations serve more than one county.

Age of Emancipation

Iowa Code Section 599.1 Emancipation occurs at age 18 unless still enrolled in high school or a general education equivalency then the order remains until age 19 or completion of high school whichever occurs first.

Statute of Limitations to enforce a child support order

None. Judgments of record must be pursued within 20 years but this excludes a child support judgment (IA Code 614.1).

Interest

IA Code 535.3 Interest shall accrue on periodic child support payments after 30 days after a payment becomes due and shall accrue interest at a rate of 10% per year thereafter.
